This approach presents challenges, especially at the bar, but Eureka has made it work well. “That became our ethos-to source and procure from inside the United States and our own communities.” “We developed the concept in 2009 during the recession, and the greatest way to pull out of a downturn is to buy and spend within your country,” says Paul Frederick, one of Eureka’s cofounders and managing partners. Along with the company’s consistently low prices-another result of its recession-era start-this stance has helped the restaurants thrive in urban markets. Eureka’s patriotism has helped its restaurants stand out in the crowded “better burger” segment. Founded in July 2009 during the worst economic crisis in 80 years, the Hawthorne, California–based company features an all-American menu across its food and drinks offerings, focusing on upscale burgers, craft beer and domestic whiskies. The concept has since expanded to include more entrée and appetizer options, as well as cocktails and small-batch whiskies.Ī lot of companies tout their commitment to using locally sourced products to strengthen their communities, but few do it with the fervor of Eureka Restaurant Group. Tom Arenberg is an instructor of news media at the University of Alabama. But the non-believers will have an argument forever. The AJC previously did some good investigative work into the Bulldogs athletic program. It also would have meant no mess like the current one. That would have meant the AJC wouldn’t have benefitted from two decades of good investigative reporting by Judd. Judd told the site before he was fired that situation occurred “during a rough period in my life (and) has no bearing on anything today.”ĭid the AJC, which hired Judd in 1999, know of this? And should this have disqualified him from journalism 35 years ago? I recognize the worth of second chances, but to me, the answers are yes and yes. Georgia’s website reported last week that the fired journalist, Alan Judd, had resigned from the Louisville Courier-Journal in 1988 because of multiple interviewee complaints of misquotes and he could not produce the interview recordings he claimed to have. That’s a basic of investigative reporting and writing, especially if you’re taking on a worshipped institution. It’s also not clear why the initial article didn’t have any details of eight of the supposed examples. But with a hugely negative angle such as this, I’m mystified that some editor (apparently) didn’t go one by one through the 11 cases – with player names – and confirm sufficient evidence of each case. Yes, every newsroom must trust its reporters to a large degree. The outlet tossed gasoline and a match on its reputation. Two is too many, but it’s not enough to make a case for systemic bad practices by the Georgia football program, as the AJC originally tried to do. The AJC said it could confirm only two instances of accused players getting soft treatment from the university, not 11. It did not retract the story and in a public statement said it had determined there was no fabrication and that only two aspects of the original work were in error.īut one of those aspects, to my mind, was the premise of the story. On Wednesday, after a necessary investigation by other AJC reporters and lawyers, the news organization corrected major parts of the story, changed the headline and fired the bylined reporter. College athletic programs hide and twist facts a lot, but the nine-page, highly detailed letter made a persuasive case that the report had to be somewhat or perhaps seriously flawed. It raised the possibility of reporter fabrication, and demanded a retraction of the entire article. The article prompted the university’s athletic association to send a letter to the AJC, claiming major inaccuracies and bias. The story claimed the AJC knew of 11 such situations but, notably, included the names of only two of the 11 players. On June 27, the AJC published a seemingly worthy expose alleging that the University of Georgia football program under head coach Kirby Smart engaged in systematic protection of players who had been accused of sexual assault. Try getting The Atlanta Journal-Constitution to agree with the conventional thinking right now. It’s not the sensitive major investigations because those get so heavily vetted before publication. The conventional thinking warns that the stories that get news organizations in trouble are the ones they’d least expect. Joe filling a market gap that allowed boys to play with dolls without risking their masculinity. Barbie is stereotyped and marketed as a “girl’s toy,” with Ken dolls and G.I. The gendering of this comparison will not come as a surprise to most readers. Instead, there is a deep abyss-an absence of the ability to imagine nuclear weapons and war. Neither fire nor radioactivity immediately come to mind. It suggests a black hole, a black box, a dark pit in public knowledge about nuclear weapons. Perhaps black better connotes the seriousness or morbidity of the Manhattan Project. It is notable that black seems to be universally associated with Oppenheimer, given that one could just as easily imagine a fiery red or radioactive green. Encountering the strange coupling of pink and black feels unsettling and out of place, and many people found humor in highlighting the paradoxical pairing.īarbenheimer car! /4tlVMePprX Many jokes juxtapose or merge the hot pink, associated with the Barbie brand, with black-the color that has come to represent Oppenheimer. The first point of comparison at the heart of Barbenheimer is color. They can reveal what is assumed, what is feared, and what is unknown.Ĭolor contrast. They are a rare window into the tone, mood, and narrative of nuclear weapons among the next generation. Though easily dismissed as frivolous, these memes should be read as deeply political. Where memes and TikToks played on points of radical difference-in color, schedule, and subject matter-there were underlying assumptions about nuclear weapons and war to be unpacked.īecause nuclear weapons and war are far removed from public scrutiny and debate, the public comes to learn about these weapons through film, television, and video games.īarbenheimer memes offer a unique insight into the popular imagination of nuclear weapons and war. To a scholar of popular culture and nuclear weapons, there are many interesting layers to the Barbenheimer phenomenon. In Japan, where Oppenheimer has not been released, the Barbenheimer mash-up has been criticized for making light of the weapons that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Trowa then left the ground-use Gundam Heavyarms hidden on Earth as he headed back to space. Coming up with a new plan for Operation Meteor, the original Trowa Barton was killed, and an anonymous young mobile suit mechanic took over as the pilot of the Gundam Heavyarms, adopting the name of its former pilot.Īs Operation Meteor escalated into a full-fledged war between OZ and the five Gundams, it became clear that the battle would eventually move to space. The Gundam design teams, however, did not want their creations used as weapons of mass murder and decided to wage the war for colony independence in their own way. Gundam Heavyarms was to be piloted by the son of the head of the Barton Security Group, Trowa Barton. Gundam Heavyarms, along with its four companion Gundams, was to be used to control the ensuing chaos. With financial backing from the Barton Foundation, Gundam Heavyarms was designed for use in the first Operation Meteor plan which involved a colony drop and subsequent "extinction level event" on Earth. It also can be used as one large explosive device to eradicate large targets. It's a last option tactic if the pilot is incapable of protecting the Mobile Suit, while not allowing it to fall into enemy hands. The system was designed to overload its power systems and has enough explosive power to destroy several city blocks. A remote detonator is placed within the cockpit and if a dire situation arrives, the pilot can destroy the Mobile Suit. The Heavyarms was built to self-destruct should the pilot choose to. After the battle, this weapon was not seen again, implying Trowa had restored the Heavyarms' left arm to its original state. When the Beam Gatling is out of ammo, it is jettisoned, revealing the Beam Saber stored within, which is then wielded by the right hand. The limitations of the ELISA and Western blot For test results to be positive, a specific combination of bands on the membrane strip must be present. When an antibody reacts with an antigen on the strip, that band will turn dark purple. In the case of the Western blot, for example, antigens are separated by size and then transferred onto a membrane strip. These Lyme disease tests allow physicians to visualize the reaction between antibodies in an infected person’s blood to specific antigens or parts of the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. The two most common diagnostic tests for Lyme disease are the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the Western blot. These tests are indirect, meaning they don’t detect the infecting bacteria or its antigens but rather the antibodies an infected person’s body produces in response to these antigens. Though several types of tests do exist for the diagnosis of Lyme disease, the best tests for a Lyme disease diagnosis (and those recommended by the CDC) are blood tests, also known as serological tests. When the disease isn’t caught in time, it can spread throughout the body and cause chronic health problems that could otherwise be avoided with earlier detection and treatment. Without access to the best tests for Lyme disease, it’s impossible to diagnose this treatable disease in a timely manner. One of the biggest challenges of fighting Lyme disease is providing patients with accurate diagnostic tests. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that there are 400,000 cases of Lyme disease annually, making Lyme a serious public health concern that only stands to grow as the spread of ticks affects disease endemicity and seasonality. When objective and nonspecific systemic symptoms of Lyme disease are absent, or when systemic symptoms have not persisted for a sustained period, serologic testing is not recommended.Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness spread by Lyme borreliae bacteria which includes, but is not limited to, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto. When objective signs of Lyme disease are absent, but unexplained nonspecific systemic symptoms have persisted for a long time (i.e., several weeks) in an individual from a highly or moderately endemic area for Lyme disease, two-step testing should be considered. Samples drawn within four weeks of disease onset should be tested for immunoglobulin M and immunoglobulin G, and samples drawn four weeks or more after disease onset should be tested for immunoglobulin G only. When pretest probability is moderate (e.g., a patient from a moderately endemic area with objective clinical findings), laboratory testing should be performed by means of the two- step approach. Lyme disease may be diagnosed without serologic testing in a patient from a highly endemic area with objective clinical findings. Physicians should assess the pretest probability of a patient with suspected Lyme disease on the basis of clinical signs and symptoms and the likelihood of exposure. When unexplained non-specific systemic symptoms such as myalgia, fatigue, and paresthesias have persisted for a long time in a person from an endemic area, serologic testing should be performed with the complete two-step approach described above. Patients who show no objective signs of Lyme disease have a low probability of the disease, and serologic testing in this group should be kept to a minimum because of the high risk of false-positive results. Samples drawn from patients within four weeks of disease onset are tested by Western blot technique for both immunoglobulin M and immunoglobulin G antibodies samples drawn more than four weeks after disease onset are tested for immunoglobulin G only. When the pretest probability is moderate (e.g., in a patient from a highly or moderately endemic area who has advanced manifestations of Lyme disease), serologic testing should be performed with the complete two-step approach in which a positive or equivocal serology is followed by a more specific Western blot test. These patients do not require serologic testing, although it may be considered according to patient preference. In patients from endemic areas, Lyme disease may be diagnosed on clinical grounds alone in the presence of erythema migrans. The approach to diagnosing Lyme disease varies depending on the probability of disease (based on endemicity and clinical findings) and the stage at which the disease may be. The use of serologic testing and its value in the diagnosis of Lyme disease remain confusing and controversial for physicians, especially concerning persons who are at low risk for the disease.
